A story

Not long ago a friend shared a story with me. Actually it wasn't even her own story. It belonged to a woman she knew. I don't know whether every detail is exactly as it happened. The woman had met a foreign man through a dating website. He seemed kind, and he was looking for a serious relationship. He spoke about building a future together. He told her she was different from everyone else. She believed him. Why wouldn't she? When someone speaks with kindness every day and tells you that you're special, it's natural to believe those words. After several weeks he arrived in the Philippines. She was excited. Then little things began to feel... strange. He never answered phone calls preferring messages. He asked her not to post pictures of them together. If she asked about his work and family, the conversation quickly changed. A few days later, she accidentally discovered something. The same man had been arranging dates with other women. And she realized she had never really known him, and she had been treated like she was disposable. He didn’t want to have a family but looked for a sex partner for some days. That’s why he didn’t use his real name and hided his identity.
